On top of the world in Rio de Janeiro!

Although we were staying in Ipanema and could spend hours people watching on the beach, my friend and I were looking to do things that were different from the norm, so we decided to go hiking up one of Rio de Janeiro’s urban forest mountains. It was such a challenging but amazing experience! Before Rio, I had never hiked up anything in my life and as a result, I had no idea how challenging even a two hour hike could be! We had a really nice guide called Edu from Jungleme tours and even though he kept insisting the hike was easy, my legs were told me otherwise the whole hike… how embarrassing!

Edu picked us up from our hotel mid morning and drove us back into Tijuaca Forest, the same place we went to the day before to see the Christ the Redeemer statue. However, the forest is huge so there were only a few tourists on our side of the forest on that day.

Once we parked the car, we began our long (for me) trek up Pedra Bonita.

After what felt to my legs like years of uphill walking, we finally reached the top of Pedra Bonita and she was beautiful. The view of the city was breathtaking and it was made even better by the fact that we were the only ones there!

I was in complete awe – couldn’t believe I was looking out over the incredible city of Rio from such an angle!

Then the clouds got closer and the heavens came pouring down so we grabbed our raincoats!

We met these guys at the top – they come over the mountain as we were taking pictures and scared the pants off us! They had had climbed up the mountain with ropes so of course we did not see them on our hike.

Impressive guys, dreadful picture of all of us!

After that we had to leave as it was POURING down with rain!

Our guide, Edu, was awesome, he had was so patient with us (meaning me!) when we were being slow getting up and down the mountain. Plus, he had beer waiting for us in the car when we were done! I don’t usually drink beer but even I couldn’t resist a chilled bottle after 4 hours hanging round the mountain!

All in all, it was a fun day, Lucy found jungleme tours on tripadvisor and I would definitely recommend them if you are looking for things to do in Rio and need a reputable hiking guide!

My outfit was perfect for the hike, comfortable and loose. It would have been even better if it was waterproof! ha!
